Getting up to speed - short and sweet with the facts...

Here is an update of what has happened so far:
Around noon on Saturday 6 Feb, Crystal went to the hospital in some pain she thought might be related to her pregnancy (almost 25 weeks). The doctor in Yuma quickly determined she was showing signs of labor and put her on medication to stop it while arranging for a transport to Phoenix since Yuma was not equipped to deal with her situation. She was airlifted to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix Saturday afternoon. When she arrived in Phoenix, an ultrasound was done and showed complete dilation and partial abruption of the placenta. Medicines normally given to stop labor do not usually with these issues. So they elected to get the baby out via c-section. David William came into the world at 1lb 10oz and was immediately transported to the NICU of Phoenix Children's Hospital which is co-located with Good Sam. He started off well, breathing on his own and seemed to be doing OK until Sunday night. We started to get some hints that all was not right on Sunday when he was showing high blood sugar levels, low platelet counts in his blood, and seizure-like activity to name a few. Our doctor ordered a head ultrasound for David which confirmed her fears. He was bleeding severely in his brain. This is a life-threatening condition that they are working to control as best they can. Should David survive, the doctors assure us he will have moderate to severe developmental problems as the bleeding will cause permanent damage to his brain. For now he is on a ventilator, taking regular blood transfusions, and giving the doctors and nurses a hard time trying to keep his body chemistry under control. He is getting another ultrasound in the morning to see if the bleeding has come under control. Please pray with us for healing and restoration of brain tissue, for a miracle only the Lord can provide.

  7. Crystal and Joel,
You are definitely in my prayers at this very difficult time, I will ask for prayers for you and your family from my church here in Corpus Christi. I pray for Davids strength and healing. Let me know if there is anything I can do, I work in the NICU at Driscoll now so unfortunatly I see this often and a close family member had a 27 weeker not too long ago. I wish you the best I know your world is turned upside down but just look up and He will find an answer.
    Love,
